Why did we establish the foundation?
Plovdiv is the most multicultural, multi-ethnic and multi-religious city in Bulgaria. For centuries, the city has been a centre and an example of peaceful coexistence between different ethnic and religious groups. According to data from the National Statistical Institute and the Chief Mufti’s Office, nearly 37,000 Muslims live in the entire Plovdiv region.
In Plovdiv, there are only two functioning mosques – the Dzhumaya Mosque and the Shahbedinova Imaret Mosque, despite the large number of Muslims in the city. During holidays and prayers, thousands of believers gather at the two mosques, and many of them cannot enter to face the qibla, directed towards Mecca, to perform their prayers.
On the other hand, thousands of Muslims in Plovdiv, for various reasons, cannot reach the two mosques located in the city centre.
The largest Muslim community is in the ‘Eastern’ district, in the neighbourhoods of ‘Stolipinovo’, ‘Izgrev’, and ‘Druzhba’. Unregulated houses of worship have been operating there for years, some of them with unclear funding and preachers.
Building a muslim temple in Еastern district
In the ‘Eastern’ district, there is a designated plot of land for the construction of a mosque under the Chief Mufti’s Office of the Islamic faith, located right next to the intersection of ‘Batak’ Street and ‘Krayna’ Street. This will enable the largest Muslim community in Plovdiv – in the ‘Eastern’ district – the opportunity to fulfil their vows as Muslims in a temple belonging to the Islamic religion.
The Chairman of the Board is Erol Sadakov – former Deputy Mayor of the ‘Eastern’ district and current Municipal Councilor in the Municipality of Plovdiv.
The construction of the mosque will support the spiritual provision and elevation of the religious community in the “Stolipinovo”, “Druzhba” and “Izgrev” neighbourhoods. It is the largest Muslim area in the entire European Union.
